Frequently Asked Questions About Family Tree Research

What is an ancestral line?

An ancestral line is the sequence of people you descend from across generations—your direct family line going backward in time.

For example:

  • You

  • your parents

  • your grandparents

  • your great-grandparents

  • and so on

That chain is your ancestral line (also called a lineage).

There are different ways people talk about ancestral lines:

  • Paternal line is your fathers

  • Maternal line is your mothers

  • Family line / bloodline → the broader inherited family ancestry

I will always research the male ancestral line from each chosen ancestor; for example, if you choose your maternal line I would trace your mother back through her fathers line. This is purely because the records for males in history are much more abundant and I will be likely to get further back. Any other requests for further research can be agreed

How far back can you trace my family tree?

This depends on a number of factors, the survival and availability of records. I use two subscription services and a few free ones to undertake my research but some records are only available for you if you attend the department in person, this is not something offered by Your Family Orchard. Most available records will get you comfortably back to the early 1800s or late 1700s. It may also depend on the country your ancestor came from as records in Ireland are notoriously incomplete.

What information do you need from me?

I will need some basic information to start researching your family tree. This will include the names of your parents, grandparents and sibilings, the places they may have lived, approximate dates of birth and marriages. Also, any supporting documents you may be willing to share and also any little family stories can all help to build up a picture.

Are birth, marriage or death certificates provided?

Often you may need to purchase these documents from the official GRO website when you hit a brick wall. These are an additional cost and are not provided in the service unless agreed. I will endeavour to find other ways of authenticating ancestors without the purchasing of these and if I cannot I go any further with the line in question you will be informed. I do not believe in guess work and will not add an ancestor to a tree unless I am confident it is correct.

How long will it take?

Whilst most researchers charge by the hour this is not how Your Family Orchard chooses to work. Due to other commitments, it may take up to 2 months for the research and write up to be completed but you will be constantly updated with the progress of your tree.

What happens if you are unable to find my ancestors?

This is unlikely and I am confident that we will be able to provide you family tree, firstly I will build a preliminary tree, if at this stage I hit any major issues I will contact you to discuss how to proceed.

How do I get started?

Once you decide that you want to enlist the services of Your Family Orchard then please contact us via email. You will then receive a link to a google form, once completed I will assess your needs and send you an invoice. Once you have received this, I request a 50% deposit for the research, the rest is payable before the electronic documents are sent to you. I can accept bank transfers and payments via PayPal
